Couch Conversations WITHASexTHERAPIST

Relationship & Sex Therapy · Based in San Diego · Serving all of California

Struggling in your relationships or sexual experiences? Come, sit with me and let's unpack what's gotten in the way of living the life you wanted.

My couch is a place for you to explore and uncover the patterns that have been running your life unconsciously. That insight, paired with some new skills, allows you to create the life you actually want instead of being stuck in the one you inherited.

From our very first breath, we reach for another. Relationships are primal.

What brings people to my couch.

Seasons of transition

New parenthood, separation and co-parenting, divorce and breakup recovery, burnout and the strange emptiness that can arrive after success, and the identity shifts that ask who you are now.

After the affair

Infidelity and the long work of rebuilding trust, making sense of what happened, and deciding what comes next when you don't yet know whether you want to stay.

Compulsive sexual behaviors

Sexual behavior that feels out of control, the secrecy, the porn, the promises to stop that don't hold, and the widening gap between what you value and what you keep doing. We work with the pattern underneath it, and shame is not part of the treatment.

Healing from sexual trauma

Healing from sexual trauma and abuse at a pace your body sets, reclaiming safety in yourself, and finding your way back to pleasure that belongs to you.

Desire that faded

Low desire and mismatched libido, one of you always wanting more than the other, sex that became a chore or stopped entirely, and the particular loneliness of loving each other while living like roommates.

When sex is painful or pressured

Pain during sex and vaginismus, difficulty with arousal or erection, orgasm difficulty, premature or delayed ejaculation, and the dread that starts to build around something that was supposed to feel good.

Shame & inherited scripts

Shame around sex, fantasy, or desire, wanting beyond the conventional script, and the messages from family, faith, and culture that taught you your wanting was wrong.

Becoming a secure self

For when you keep finding the same relationship in different people, or losing yourself inside the one you're in. Individual work on your patterns in love, anxious and avoidant cycles, and staying rooted in who you are while staying close to another. Because the relationship is still the patient, even when one person is in the room.

Here's a little about me.

I'm Shantal, insatiably curious about human patterns for as long as I can remember. I was a rebel against systems even in grade school, ditching classes to sit in Barnes & Noble and coffee shops, devouring books and articles and poems, asking why any of us do what we do at all.

Becoming a therapist… is the best decision I have ever made. I spent nearly a decade before that in a leadership role in finance that kept disappointing me, all while navigating my own unconscious patterns, limiting beliefs that kept me playing really small, feeling depleted and alone, especially in my romantic and sexual relationships. The first step for me was changing my career. It could have been anything, really, but that was the moment I learned the power of agency. The path ahead, while at times very difficult, was so, so worth it. More than anything, that season taught me that I wanted to support others in taking agency of their own lives too, especially in their relationships and sexual experiences.

I've dedicated my career to it. To support this work, I am trained in all three levels of the Gottman Method, evidence-based and the gold standard in relationship therapy, and in EMDR, specifically to allow for a sensitive navigation when sexual or relationship trauma shows up. I'm currently a PhD student in Human Sexuality, with ongoing training from the best therapists in the field. I specialize in helping partners and individuals navigate the various transitions that inevitably show up in life. Some of those seasons can feel more difficult than others, such as infidelity, desire mismatch, sex that has drifted, and compulsive sexual behaviors.

I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in San Diego, working with individuals and couples in person and virtually across California. I'm direct and warm in equal measure, as willing to name the hard thing as I am to sit with you while you find your own way to it. If you've been waiting for the right time to do this work, consider this your invitation to the hard work that's so, so worth it.

What I've come to understand about doing this work: change only happens when you decide you want it bad enough. When you finally decide that how you're living is no longer serving you. I'm telling you the truth about this because the truth is what this work runs on, and you might as well start now. Me and my credentials? They only matter when you're ready and willing.

My Approach: Insights to Integration.

“We’re all just walking each other home.” — Ram Dass
First, we understand

Getting to Know Yourself

Nothing changes until we understand it.

We begin by tracing the foundational messages that shaped your inner world, about emotion, identity, worth, and desire, messages inherited from family, culture, faith, and early relationships. Whether you come alone or together, this is where we begin.

Then we see how it shows up

Patterns & Parts, in Relationship

We repeat what we don’t repair.

The protective patterns from early life show up in partnership: the pursue-and-withdraw cycle, the shutdown, the over-functioning. We learn to spot them, and create a pause between reaction and response.

& in the body

Patterns & Parts, in Sexuality & Desire

The body won't lie.

Desire, shutdown, performance, longing, shame, these aren’t separate problems. They’re mirrors of emotional safety and the parts of you that learned to seek love, or avoid it.

And finally, becoming

Reconnection with Self

Becoming you.

New ways of relating, communicating, and being intimate get tried, fumbled, and tried again in everyday life. It's messy here, and it's supposed to be. And what emerges is the Self that was there all along: courageous, confident, playful, and alive to desire. This is the homecoming.

Healing begins when we feel seen.

This work isn’t about fixing you. It’s about being seen, witnessed, and experiencing safety. The patterns that protect you and the patterns that isolate you are often the same patterns, and we don’t tear them down. We understand what they were for, and practice new ways of responding until the old ones are no longer your only option.

You inherited a story. You are the sole author now.
I will walk alongside you until you find your way back home to yourself, and to each other.

Let's work together.

I'll work on myself when things calm down — same energy as waiting to save money until you're rich Sex isn't the problem. Feeling unwanted is. Unlearning your sex script is a wildly underrated skill When a man brings infidelity into therapy, it rarely sounds how people expect Myth: if I love my partner I should naturally feel horny. Truth: desire is shaped by context.
